Health and Safety Policy for Cleaners Belsize Park
Cleaners Belsize Park is committed to providing safe and healthy working conditions for all employees, contractors, clients and visitors. This Health and Safety policy sets out how we manage risks associated with domestic and commercial cleaning, and how we protect people, property and the environment within our service areas.
Policy Statement and Objectives
The management of Cleaners Belsize Park accepts overall responsibility for health and safety and aims to prevent injuries, work-related ill health and accidents arising from our activities. We will identify hazards, assess risks, implement control measures, and review our arrangements regularly. Our objectives are to comply with applicable health and safety legislation, promote a culture of safety awareness, provide employees with appropriate information, instruction and training, and continuously improve our health and safety performance.
Responsibilities
Management is responsible for putting this policy into practice, ensuring that safe systems of work are in place, and that cleaners receive the training and equipment they need to work safely. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring standards on site, reporting hazards and incidents, and supporting staff to follow safe working procedures. Cleaners and other staff are responsible for taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff must follow company safety rules, use equipment correctly, report defects and hazards immediately, and cooperate with any investigation or review after an incident.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Cleaners Belsize Park undertakes regular risk assessments for typical cleaning tasks carried out in homes, offices and other premises. We assess risks associated with slips, trips and falls, manual handling, use of cleaning chemicals, working at height on small step ladders, use of electrical equipment and exposure to biological or sharp hazards. From these assessments we develop safe systems of work, instructions and method statements which are communicated to staff through training and supervision. Risk assessments are reviewed whenever work processes change or following any significant incident.
Use of Cleaning Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
We recognise the risks posed by cleaning agents and other substances used in our work. All chemicals used by Cleaners Belsize Park are checked for suitability and are stored, labelled and handled in line with manufacturer instructions and applicable regulations. Material safety information is made available to staff and integrated into training. Cleaners are instructed never to mix chemicals, to use only the prescribed quantities and dilutions, and to ensure good ventilation where required. Where possible we select lower hazard or environmentally considerate products that still achieve effective cleaning results for our clients.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be eliminated by other means, personal protective equipment is supplied and maintained by the company. Depending on the task, this may include gloves, eye protection, masks or respirators, aprons and non slip footwear. Staff are trained in the correct use, cleaning and storage of personal protective equipment and are required to wear the items specified for each task. Defective or worn equipment must be reported and replaced without delay.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many cleaning tasks involve lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling equipment and supplies. To minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, Cleaners Belsize Park provides manual handling training and guidance on safer techniques. Heavy items should be handled using trolleys or shared lifting where reasonably practicable. Staff are instructed to avoid overreaching, to adjust mop handles and vacuum cleaners to a comfortable height, and to take short breaks from repetitive tasks where possible. Clients are encouraged to advise us of any access issues that may affect manual handling risks.
Use of Equipment and Electrical Safety
All equipment supplied by Cleaners Belsize Park, such as vacuum cleaners, steam cleaners and floor machines, is maintained in safe working order. Staff are trained in the correct operation of each item and are instructed not to use equipment that they are not trained or authorised to use. Electrical leads and plugs must be checked before use and any damage reported immediately. Equipment should not be used with wet hands or near standing water unless it is specifically designed and rated for that use.
Infection Control and Hygiene
The nature of cleaning work means that cleaners may encounter biological hazards such as bodily fluids, mould, litter or contaminated waste. We provide procedures and training on safe handling and disposal of such materials, including the use of gloves and other protective equipment, appropriate cleaning agents and disinfection methods. Cleaning cloths, mops and other reusable items are colour coded where appropriate and cleaned or replaced regularly to prevent cross contamination between different areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported promptly to management. Reports are recorded, investigated and used to identify any additional control measures or training needs. Cleaners Belsize Park maintains procedures for dealing with fire, first aid needs, chemical spills and other foreseeable emergencies. Staff receive training appropriate to their role so that they know how to respond and who to contact if an incident occurs at a client location.
Training, Information and Supervision
All new cleaners receive an introduction that includes health and safety information relevant to their duties. Ongoing training covers topics such as chemical safety, manual handling, use of equipment, personal protective equipment and emergency procedures. Supervisors monitor working practices on site, provide feedback and support, and ensure that any updated procedures are communicated clearly to staff. Additional training is provided when new equipment, products or processes are introduced.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Cleaners Belsize Park values feedback from employees and clients on health and safety matters. Staff are encouraged to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safer ways of working. We review this policy and our procedures regularly to take account of changes in legislation, industry guidance, technology and the practical experience of our teams working in homes and business premises across our service areas.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed at regular intervals and whenever there are significant changes in our operations or applicable legal requirements. Updated versions are communicated to all employees and are available to clients on request. By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, Cleaners Belsize Park aims to deliver reliable cleaning services while protecting the health, safety and welfare of everyone affected by our work.
